2019 ACW Inc. National Conference
The biennial National Conference of Australian Church Women Inc. was held in Brisbane 9-12 September 2019 at the Mercure Hotel, North Quay, Brisbane. The theme for the past two years has been ‘Women Serving Open Heartedly’ and this was also the conference theme.
We were pleased to receive welcome messages from the Premier of Queensland, the Lord Mayor of Brisbane and the General Secretary of Queensland Churches Together.
We commenced the Tuesday and Wednesday mornings with a Bible Study, ably led by Major Dr Marie Louise Craig. These studies were very well received and gave us much food for thought. Another speaker was Dr Liza Lamis, from the Philippines, who is the Executive Secretary of the International Committee for the Fellowship of the Least Coin prayer movement. Our conference evenings were enhanced by a small bell-ringing group from a local church.
The major part of the conference was the presentation of reports from each Unit, member denominations, World Day of Prayer Australia, other affiliated organisations, and each of our own ACW areas of responsibility—World Community Day, Fellowship Day, Winifred Kiek Scholarship, National Essay Competition for Year 9 Schoolgirls, Fellowship of the Least Coin, Asian Church Women’s Conference, ACW Website and ACW Archives. Other business was the induction of Lt Colonel Lynette Green as a National Life Member, and new notices of motion for discussion. We also participated in a moving remembrance service for members who have passed away since the last conference in 2017.
The South Australian Unit has taken on the responsibility of National Executive for the years 2019-2021, and the members of this Executive were inducted during the closing session of the conference.
Report from Lieut-Colonel Lynette Green
Secretary, Victorian Unit ACW
Prior to the National Conference, Dr Liza Lamis visited the NSW and VIC Units. Liza is pictured here with a few of the VIC Unit members at Port Melbourne for a fish and chip lunch. The Melbourne weather was a very cool change for Liza, and she borrowed a beanie, scarf and extra coat from the Victorian secretary.
Clockwise from Liza: Rev'd Anne Kennedy, Pam Modra, Lieut-Colonel Lynette Green, Joy Morley and Major Donna Bryan.
